Do You Feel Like Your Career Lacks Meaning And Purpose?

Are you unhappy with your job or career, but you’re not really sure why?

Has imposter syndrome made you question your abilities and doubt your worth?

Deep down, does it seem like you’re just not contributing to society in a meaningful way?

Maybe you feel like you’re just going through the motions at your job, surviving rather than thriving. Perhaps you’ve come to realize that your work environment is toxic—your boss doesn’t appreciate you, your coworkers don’t trust each other, and burnout is normalized and even encouraged.

Although you want to make a change, maybe you’re reluctant or afraid to—the idea of throwing yourself into the unknown is unsettling, especially if your current gig offers financial stability. As a result, you might be thinking of pursuing career counseling.

Career Challenges Often Go Hand In Hand With Existential Anxiety

Let’s face it: your work takes up a huge portion of your life. So if you’re in an unfulfilling line of work, it’s normal to find yourself asking existential questions like: What do I really want to do with my life? What are my career values? Does my current job or career align with those values? If not, what are my other options?

Naturally, this can lead to a lot of anxiety about the future and depression over the fact that things never seem to change. To cope with all the pain, you might keep yourself as busy as possible or turn to substances to distract yourself.

As a mental health counselor and career coach, it’s my mission to help you stop feeling stuck and connect with your greater purpose. Together, we can explore the existential questions you’ve been wrestling with and figure out what steps you need to take to get from point A to point B in your career.

Many People Are Told That Meaningful, Energizing Work Is A Myth

For most of us, our careers are very much tied to our happiness and sense of fulfillment in life. Oftentimes, we end up in what I like to call the “serendipitous career”—that is, we simply fall into a career because of family pressures and other external variables. We may have chosen a certain path because it made sense for us at the time, even if it ultimately doesn’t align with our interests, values, and long-term goals today.

Part of the problem is that many people in our society are raised with a deficit mindset rather than an abundance mindset. They’re told that meaningful, engaging work is a myth, and that the best you can do is just “grin and bear it” and be happy with the job you have instead of searching for something better. As a result, many people stay in the same role for a long time and have limited definitions of what success looks like.

What Does It Mean To Cultivate An Abundance Mindset?

Toxic work environments are like toxic relationships—they’re hard to get out of. It’s easier to stay with “the devil you know” than to jump ship and throw yourself into the unknown. The longer you stay in a role that is no longer right for you, the more your confidence is drained, which is part of what makes it so difficult to leave.

The idea that work can be joyous, fulfilling, and life-affirming is alien to many, but that’s just what cultivating an abundance mindset means. It’s about finding an environment where you’re respected and valued instead of taken advantage of or invalidated. If you’re ready to make the transition into a more fulfilling line of work, I’m confident that career counseling can help.

Career Counseling Can Help You Live From A Place Of Abundance

Finding and maintaining a high-achieving role requires support, guidance, and the space to step back and see the bigger picture. That’s what career counseling is all about. It’s a chance to explore what you want out of your career and then come up with a plan for how to achieve that.

Using a mix of therapy and coaching strategies, you and I will cover everything from budgets and business plans to childhood traumas and longstanding emotional wounds, ensuring that every area of your life is addressed.

My approach is culturally humble, LGBTQ+-affirming, and rooted in both psychological insight and executive coaching. The work I do is inherently fun and interesting—the assessments I offer can give you so many valuable insights into who you are, what you like and don’t like, and why certain work environments may not be right for you. This can ultimately help you find meaning, purpose, and balance both in and out of work.

What To Expect In The Career Counseling Process

In career counseling sessions, I’ll help you navigate your challenges with a thorough, in-depth career assessment. We’ll dive into your family history and complete a genogram so that we can understand how your background informs the person you are today. In all, we will use five different types of career evaluations:

  • The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to assess your Personality Type

  • The Strong Interest and Skills Confidence Profile to explore your areas of interest and level of confidence

  • The FIRO-B test to assess your leadership style, work style preferences, environmental needs, and interpersonal needs

  • The Work Engagement Profile to evaluate your intrinsic wants and needs and figure out what gives your life meaning and purpose

  • A Career Values Assessment to help you clarify and prioritize work values

Once the assessments are done, we’ll utilize the results to outline the next steps you can take to secure a new role. I’ll provide support and accountability and help you follow through on your goals, and I’ll also coach you on drafting a cover letter, developing a resume, and completing aspects of the job search that are easy to ignore.

On a deeper level, I’ll help you work through issues like imposter syndrome, deficit mindset, and unresolved trauma. You can expect to walk away with a newfound understanding of yourself and your needs and goals, setting yourself up for success years down the road.

You May Have Some Questions About Career Counseling…

I am already in therapy. Can I also see you for career counseling?

Yes, we can focus on career issues, and as personal and interpersonal issues arise (which they usually do), we can acknowledge those challenges and redirect them back to your work with your therapist. To find a fulfilling career, we need to integrate deep-rooted mental health work with strategic career planning, and that’s why counseling and coaching work so well together.

What if I’m not in therapy and personal issues arise in career counseling?

The truth is that we really can’t do career counseling without including the personal aspects of your life, since the two are interconnected. Our personal lives play out in our work and vice versa. Many problems—such as lack of confidence, imposter syndrome, and deficit mindset—are worth focusing on in both career counseling and coaching.

I have often found that finding fulfilling work can empower someone to make bold changes to their personal lives. Similarly, recovering from trauma and overcoming personal barriers can help people move forward in their work. That’s why it’s essential to involve both the personal and the professional in career counseling.

I have taken career assessments in the past. How will this be different?

This process is far deeper and more contextualized than your standard assessment. As a licensed mental health counselor, I’m able to provide guidance on an in-depth level and integrate the information from the career assessments in a way that’s personalized to you. It’s one thing to have the right information—it’s another thing to know what to do with it, and that’s why career counseling is such an invaluable process.
